easter
the getz grandparents, staci, & micah came up to visit a couple of weeks ago. first time we've seen them since christmas break-- it was so fun to catch up with them all and hang out. henry & micah had fun together...
they boys swam with grandpa doug & grandma carol -- henry was pretty timid in the water this time around, but had fun.
we had the privilege of staying home for a full five days over easter break-- it was wonderful!! henry made some major strides in potty training (we took the time to work hard with him on it during this rare treat of having 5 days in a row in the same house!) & is living it up in undies. accidents are still a part of life, but he's doing really, really well. henry loves feeling like a "big boy" now. in fact, just today he ran back to his room to switch undies, b/c as he had hopped off the potty & was putting his undies on (yes, the kid loves taking off both undies & pants for the task)-- he noticed the baby face on the tag in the gerber undies. he tells me, "these are baby undies." and runs back to change them. how can i argue with that?
henry loved dying eggs with grandma carmen...
h did a great job of finding his elmo easter basket-- here he is checking out his goods.
we had a bunch of great relaxing time together as a family....
some work is being done on our house these days-- this weekend it's going to be painting, so casey removed all of the cupboard doors & drawers in the kitchen to prep it. henry loved having a new spot to hide.
on easter, henry really got in to getting dressed up. he even was afraid to do certain tasks b/c he didn't want to mess up his suit.
per henry's request, we also took a picture of all of the matching boys....

we finally made a snowman at the last snowfall. h & i had to grab casey to help us, b/c i got a little too carried away with the size of snowballs i was rolling....and didn't dare try to pick it up to stack them. casey did a great job-- complete with a leaf toupee.
so sad...henry was heartbroken when he found out his new friend couldn't come back inside with us. to top it off, some mean neighborhood kids kicked the snowman over a couple hours after we made it. he was pretty much freaking out--and was finally okay with realizing he could make a new one the next time it snows. (though i really hope the snow is done now!)
one morning as henry was eating his toast he started laughing and goes, "look, mom-- it's daddy!" such an artist.
henry loves the extra uncle siah time he gets during this time at trinity....
he just learned how to master the rock climbing wall at the playground...
we celebrated grandma "cow-man's" (carmen's) birthday this past weekend. it was fun to have her & dad over for dinner-- henry was very excited to get an excuse to help blow out some candles.
we received this picture from kara last night-- she just got back from a trip to disneyland and was sweet to wait in a line of kids to pose & send this to henry. he pretty much freaked out when he saw this....and yells, "ca-queem!" (mcqueen)
henry then went on to make elaborate plans..."we'll go & pick up kara & go there! daddy can come....momma can come....henry can come....and we'll go there!!" and the wonder of disney continues!
i'm into my 3rd trimester now. measuring great with everything appearing to go well. casey finished up his midterms this past week, so he's onto the 2nd half of the semester. this time is going so quickly now-- it's starting to feel like we barely have enough time to get everything done that needs to get done before june.
* loads of schoolwork (for casey)
* prepare baby room...henry's going to move into a big boy room upstairs next month- and he's very excited about it!
* prepare our home for sale -- we're hoping to put it on the market soon after the baby arrives
ooh, since the last time i posted, we also were given the amazing gift of a spring break. the lourias let us stay home for a week-- it was a wonderful time of relaxing, studying (poor seminarian), and connecting time. we were able to get some time in with friends, visit our church plant small group, and just get rested. we both came off spring break feeling like God really used that time to keep getting us more excited for the work in Berlin with the church plant-- I can't wait to see what God has in store there.
henry continues to develop into such a little talkative & creative guy. one of my favorite things to do is ask him about the bible stories he learns at sunday school, mops, and cbs. his perspective on them are so great--here are a few of the recent bible stories he's been learning, see if you can guess the real story through henry's summary...
"lady's hair was on jesus' toes"
"guy coming through roof...falling...going 'boom!'"
h is also having fun learning his letters & numbers-- as well as drawing them. most of his letters look like little c's -- it's really cute. potty training is in full swing as well-- we discovered that we have a very achievement-oriented boy. the sticker chart with prizes as he finishes up an entire line has done amazingly well! we've got a bit of a hump to get over at the moment, b/c the poor kid has an illness that is complicating the process of making it to the bathroom on time. i'm impressed he's made it to the toilet as often as he has been (about 2/3 of the time), considering how volatile this has been. poor guy-- maybe when he heals up from this we can dare to start venturing into the realm of undies. i've got to run-- suspicious sounds are coming from the kitchen....
ps. here are the answers from the above quiz....the woman who washed jesus' feet with her hair & the story of jesus healing the paralytic who was lowered through the roof

henry's spent this winter starting & fine-tuning hobbies. it's been so fun to watch him enjoy new things! he absolutely is in love with gairette's guitar, because it looks & feels like the real thing. he sat & played it forever...
henry also loves to cook. the lourias got him the sweetest christmas gift-- an apron with "getz cook" on it, hat, and mitt. he loves using them when we cook. he & gairette were a big help with muffins a few weeks ago...
...when that hat falls down, it becomes a bonnet of sorts.
henry's first drawing of a person.
no help was given, other than casey giving him ideas of things he could have on his person. since this first drawing, most ppl he draws also have mouths as well. he also has started to add a lot more than just 2 eyes...why limit yourself to two eyes when you can add as many as you want, right?
here's our baby at 19 weeks....too cute. i'm SO excited to find out if this babe's a boy or girl-- but i'm really thankful for the wait. it's making this whole pregnancy deal even more exciting for me!
here i am at 23 weeks (this past week)...
this is insane, but somehow in the 4-day period that covered valentine's day, casey & i were blessed with 2 dates (thank you a ton to the lourias & dad!), a night out at our church's valentine's banquet, and a chilled movie night at home. i came off the weekend literally floating-- there's not much else i'd rather do in the world than have fun connecting time with sweet casey & having relaxed family time. it came at a great time, too-- this last semester of seminary has already proven to be quite a challenging & time-consuming one for casey. meaning it's challenging & time-consuming for our little family, as henry & i band together to try & support him and let him study more.
as i was doing my hair for our date, henry runs in & laughs at me, saying..."you look fancy, like kara!" i laugh, and admit that it really has been a long time since i've done much to my hair-- and i never straighten it anymore. he keeps laughing and saying how i look like kara. he then goes on to say, "...but you're still my katie mama." aw thanks, henry! here we are before the date....
david stopped by for lunch on monday, it was so great to see him! henry was SO excited about seeing him that he made him a special gift beforehand: a load of wrapping paper covered in stickers, a drawing inside, and covered it all with masking tape. (does that remind you of anyone, josiah?)
henry is giving one of his classic "crazy" faces. he thinks he's so hilarious when he squints his eyes & makes this face!

confession
most of you know this, but i realized i hadn't yet posted it here. there is a very good reason why i have been so behind on blogging this fall-- it's called pregnancy. we're due to have a new getz baby arrive on june 11, 2009. very exciting! when i look back at the past few months, they honestly are just a hazy pregnant blur-- i spent most of my time sleeping or laying around trying to beat morning sickness. in the past week i have officially transitioned to the wonders of the 2nd trimester-- morning sickness is subsiding & life is starting to feel a bit more normal. the "pop" of the belly happened last week as well-- much earlier than last pregnancy.
henry's been a very inquisitive toddler these days-- so much fun. he wants to know the reasoning behind almost everything. here are some questions he had for casey yesterday, as they were watching some fish in an aquarium...
"dad, why fish-- 2 eyes-- on head--looking at me?"
This next question was referring to a fish that was resting on an underwater castle...."why fish on time-out?"
henry loves christmas music, with his favorite song being jingle bells. he'll run around the house yell-singing it. the other day he started singing away in a manger for the first time-- his mixed-up line that he kept repeating was so great.."the stars in the manger laid down their sweet head."
we're off on christmas break in just over a day. we all couldn't be more excited. great family time to come, a giant indoor waterpark, a week on the beach in the dominican republic, a couple weeks of living in one home, and time to get rejuvenated. many pics are sure to come. have a wonderful christmas.

Yo yo - this is Casey. I wanted to call attention to the fact that in Katie's last post there was this picture of Henry with a crazy smile:
Please notice how close this forced smile is to Katie's own baby pic:
It's amazing! He inherited it from his mother.
I also wanted to post a quick note about Henry's and my public bathroom experiences lately. They have been particularly interesting since we have been working on potty training him. Once he put his hands all over the nasty public toilet seat and then rubbed them through my hair. Another time, in a restaurant, he yelled "Hola!" at everyone who came in the bathroom. If he got no acknowlegement (typical of guys following unspoken bathroom etiquette), he continued yelling it at them (even if he was in a different stall and couldn't see them). It is particularly embarrassing when Henry yells "Hola" to Indian men, since it looks like two white parents ineptly taught our kid to greet all Hispanics with the word. Another time, at the YMCA, there was a foreign man changing his clothes next to us and Henry started yelling "Why man naked? Why man naked?" So... it's been interesting. :)

too fast
okay, this autumn flew by too quickly. i have a bunch of catching up on our last 1.5 months...so i'll just dive in. kara and jon came to visit in mid-october. SO fun to see them & get a lot of good time hanging out with them in. kara brought rad rainboots for henry...he's sporting them in his typical half-nude fashion.
homemade pretzels...so yummy. might have to become a tradition!
henry's first golf trip.
on that trip, we caught a caterpillar. henry wasn't comfortable with having a caterpillar so close to him...
many hours have been spent at the playground this fall. he's so much bigger than he was in the spring...now he gets frustrated if we don't go to the parks with the huge slides.
at the end of october my cousins & aunt came down for a quick visit. it was allison's bday-- aunt sharon treated everyone with a coldstone cake. it was amazing!
our tree out front once again dumped it's beautiful leaves....
it was such a hot day...70+ degrees. henry ended up running around like this...it was great.
sadly, this was the only trick-or-treating pic i got. the jingsts came with us-- henry was overjoyed to be able to do it with eli. it was really fun!
crazy nap hair.
last weekend we went down to morton and spent some good time with the getz family. friday night was our getz family christmas....
we can't stop dressing them the same...it's just too fun.
the next day was micah's 1st birthday party. he's such a cutie-- always smiling! it was hilarious-- henry would coach micah with the pics & stand back and say, "micah, go cheese!" too cute. poor henry got sick this weekend...so he barely smiled for the camera himself. he was so tired most of the time.
casey loves tickling micah-- his deep belly laughs were making us all laugh so hard!
henry found some great flowers in the neighboring greenhouse...he kept sneaking off to sniff them.
henry's decided to help me stop biting my nails. when he catches me doing he sternly says, "stop biting your toenails, mama!" can't seem to get him to understand the difference b/w fingernails & toenails....i guess nails are just for toenails.

costume shoot II
i can't help myself. i wanted to do it this year because henry actually likes trying on clothes. so if he likes clothes....why not costumes? here we are in the pottery barn bathroom....
henry's personal fav-- who doesn't like fries?
it was fun. he didn't stay in any one costume too long b/c they were all ones with small spots for a large toddler head. but he still was game to try on more. my personal fav was the hot dog. what mom doesn't love seeing their kid dressed as food?

flushed undies
the adventures of potty training are beyond words. here's the latest...note: i'll do my best not to gross out anyone too much with this story-- but bear with me, because it was really gross!...this past weekend i gave henry an ultimatum, warning him that if he kept going #2 in his undies he would have to start helping me clean them out. saturday it happened-- he once again soiled his undies with grossness-- so i got to work having him help me after i cleaned him up. he and i were at the toilet, and he was NOT at all interested in helping with the cleaning process. after much stern encouragement, he gingerly grabbed the soiled superman undies with two fingers...and carefully dunked them in the toilet water. he was, in fact, so careful with his delicate cleaning process that not much cleaning was happening...so i got my hand in there and helped him out. i decided it was time for new water, so i grasped the undies with one hand and flushed the toilet with the other. immediately after that henry decided to relieve the itch in his eye...with HIS SOILED HAND. that got a quick NO!! from me as i grabbed his hand to get it out of his eye...which then inspired him to nervously put his other hand IN HIS MOUTH. i immediately grabbed both of his hands in an effort to save him from himself. at that moment we both looked down into the toilet to get one last glimpse of the superman undies before they disappeared forever.
i was then overtaken with the situation and moan/yelled a loud NOOOOOOOOOOO!!! ... i was envisioning the future expression on casey's face (scheduled to arrive home in about 10 minutes) as i would attempt to explain why i had clogged the toilet with underwear. this scared henry beyond all reason, and his naked little body sprinted to the other side of the house to find grandma...complete with flailing poopy hands. i chased him, pleading with him to come back & NOT TOUCH grandma, who was in the kitchen making breakfast. insanity.
major lessons learned:
1) henry learned that when you poop in your undies the penalties can be quite high-- you not only have to clean those undies, but you might even lose them forever.
2) toddler undies are small enough to flush down a toilet. no lie! i flushed that thing 5 more times afterwards, just to check. in the end, it wasn't so bad...one less nasty scrubbing experience.
here's h a couple of weeks ago sporting a band-aid over his owie. it was a bad ingrown fingernail that really hurt- so it helped that bear got one, too. yes, that stuffed animal is named Bear.
note: if you ever put a band-aid on a stuffed animal, use cheap band-aids. i still have not been able to get the band-aid off poor bear. i haven't yet decided if he'll just have an owie forever or a shaved paw-- for now we're just letting bear's owie have lots of extra healing time.
nakedness is henry's new obsession. i'd love to post my pics of this stage, but this blog is just too public. email me if you'd like some, b/c it really is so cute.
h continues to love to help with cooking. last night he helped us make some wonderful wheat pizzas-- spinach, fresh mozzarella, feta, fresh tomatoes, peppers, & ham-- a conglomeration of all the pizzas c & i love to order.
he even reads the recipes....
today was arts & crafts day at our home- decoupage pumpkins. h was a pro.
after a few minutes of doing it henry was like, "painting... ith fun!"
next we'll be onto real paint.....

a real weekend
we just got off the BEST weekend. casey had the weekend off & we stayed down here in mundelein...with almost NO plans. casey made homemade dinosaur pancakes on saturday. henry wanted to keep his dinosaur perfectly intact- and got pretty frustrated when we had to cut it for him to eat it! we then hopped a train to go down to the city. henry pretty much "feaked out" (yes, he does say that phrase regularly! as well as "that feaky")-- he was SO pumped to ride a real train. here's h & c getting ready to ride the train....
he sang thomas the train songs for awhile while he rode. h had so much fun looking out the window.
we then hopped a free trolley & went down to navy pier. by then h fell asleep- guess he was NOT going to let go of his afternoon nap.
we finally found our free world music concert when they were ending the last song. we did enjoy the stained glass exhibit, and it kept h out of the sun. he woke up in time to ride the trolley & train back home. on the way home, we stopped to get gino's chicago style pizza for dinner. so fun!
on sunday henry woke me up at 6:30 am-- what?!-- so we ran over to dunkin' for our first donut run down here. he had fun helping me pick them out-- what is it with kids & sprinkles? we went to willow creek for church. what a great sunday to show up-- darlene zschech was doing an entire worship serice. neither of us had seen her live before-- it was an amazing time of worship. i was especially happy for c, too-- you can't get much better than that for a worship pastor's day off.
on the way out of church i had the following conversation with h about sunday school....
did they read you a story, henry?
yeth.
oh, what was it about?
jethuth (jesus)
wow, what did jesus do?
open the bi-bo (bible)
did you sing?
yeth. jethuth, for the bi-bo tells me so. (henry's name for- jesus loves me)
josiah came over for lunch that day. great timing, b/c h was starting to ask about "unca siah" all the time. here's a cute one josiah got...
*sigh* what a gift to be able to experience a real weekend. showed me again just how much more intentional we need to be about setting moments aside to rest during the week....to make up for our typical crazy weekends. after a long week of work, our souls are made to crave rest!
